We are a consultancy organisation based in the UK with the mission of helping British companies engage with promising business opportunities in Syria. SBCI promotes business opportunities and advocates for beneficial partnerships between British and Syrian businesses. After 14 years of suffering, and 5 decades of dictatorship, Syria is embarking on the path of recovery, making it a fertile land for doing business over the next few decades.
The war destroyed most of the country’s infrastructure and held back economic development. Between 2011 and 2024 Syria’s economy shrunk by more than 85%. Due to the Assad regime’s atrocities, the country has been subject to international sanctions further adding to its economic woes. However, with the collapse of the regime on 8 December 2024, a new chapter begins. Discussions for establishing a representative transitional government are already underway. There has been a flurry of diplomatic visits to the country and there are expectations that the sanctions will soon be lifted.
It is still early days in this new chapter, but many countries and international companies are eyeing the great opportunities that lie ahead. Syria has significant resources including oil, gas, relatively fertile land for agriculture, and various tourist attractions. In addition, Syria has a very young population, median age is 23.5, and millions in diaspora keen to bring their wealth and experience back to their home country. These resources, coupled with support from the international community, will allow Syria to embark on a reconstruction journey producing many opportunities for foreign companies. Some economic reports suggest that the country will need a great deal of reconstruction projects estimated to be worth around £350 billion.
The UK is one of the advanced economies that could play a key role in rebuilding Syria’s economy by delivering strategic projects in critical sectors like housing, infrastructure, electricity generation, renewable energy, petrochemicals, manufacturing, telecommunication, financial services, logistical services and education. It is vital for British businesses to be early movers in exploring the business opportunities Syria offers and try to forge commercial partnerships that benefit them as well as the Syrian people.
Entering any foreign market, however, requires meticulous research and planning. This is particularly the case in a rapidly evolving political, economic and legal context such as the Syrian one. This is where SBCI comes in. We have a deep knowledge of the country, its language, culture and business practice, the challenges it faces and the great potential it holds. We have firsthand experience of working in Syria and are connected to an extensive network of business partners already working in the country. This knowledge, coupled with our experience of the standards of business conduct in the UK, makes us well positioned to support UK companies in navigating their way into the Syrian market and, if needed, assist them in managing their operations there. We will promote the opportunities in Syria as they become available for UK businesses to consider. We will support them in exploring their potential, managing the associated risks, bidding for them, conducting the negotiation and managing the execution stages of these projects.
